Laughing gas is a mild form of sedation delivered through a mask placed over your nose. The gas is a blend of nitrous oxide and oxygen, and when inhaled, it produces a calming, euphoric effect. Instead of feeling worried, patients often report a sense of relaxation and comfort, with many saying that the treatment time seems to pass more quickly.
Unlike stronger sedation methods, laughing gas does not put you to sleep. You remain awake, aware, and able to communicate with our dental team throughout your treatment. Its gentle nature makes it suitable for a range of procedures—from simple fillings and cleanings to more involved restorative or cosmetic work.
If you’re interested in trying laughing gas, let us know ahead of your appointment. We’ll discuss your medical history, current medications, and any concerns you might have. On the day of your procedure, we’ll place a small mask over your nose and ask you to breathe normally. Within minutes, you should begin to feel a sense of relaxation or lightness.
Throughout your treatment, we’ll monitor your comfort and adjust the flow of nitrous oxide as needed. You’ll remain awake and aware, able to signal if you have any questions or need a break. Once the procedure is complete, we’ll have you breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes. This clears the effects of the laughing gas, allowing you to leave the office feeling clear-headed and ready to resume your day. There’s no need for an escort or special arrangements—most patients can safely drive themselves home.
